An Introduction to the Open Source AI Definition for HigherEd
Anne-Marie Scott is an international expert in digital, online, and open education and the CFO (Treasurer) of the Open Source Initiative, the non-profit which stewards global definitions of open source software and open source artificial intelligence.
She was Deputy Provost of Athabasca University (Canada), and prior to that worked at the University of Edinburgh (UK) for nearly two decades, leading many major digital and open education initiatives. She has been a member of the Government of British Columbia’s (Canada) Digital Learning Advisory Committee since 2021 and served six years as the Board Chair of the Apereo Foundation, a global non-profit supporting the use of open source software in higher education.
She currently works as an educational consultant in Canada, the UK and Ireland, and teaches on critical approaches to educational technology at Royal Roads University (Canada).
Talk Description: This talk will introduce the Open Source AI Definition, how it came to be, and explain why higher education institutions should be interested in it.
The Open Source AI Definition v1.0 was developed by the Open Source Initiative through a global multi-stakeholder process and defines what makes an AI system “open source”. Higher Education has a long history of development, innovation, and engagement with open source technologies, often aligned to open education and open science agendas. As we increasingly use AI across our learning, teaching, research, and knowledge mobilisation work, having the ability to continue to work openly as part of a larger knowledge commons has never been more vital, and the Open Source AI Definition is a critical component to achieving this.
