Open Innovation Lab @ the Library: Launching students and advancing Open Source with curricular & co-curricular project based learning

 


 

cyril_front.jpg?itok=xW1LeBWnCyril Oberlander is dedicated to fostering lifelong learning, and to curating a vibrant learning environment that positively transforms lives, libraries and learning. Currently serving as the Dean of the Library at Cal Poly Humboldt since July 2014, Cyril has served at libraries such as; SUNY Geneseo in New York, University of Virginia Libraries, Portland State University, and served as a consultant to public, academic, and special libraries. Interests include collaborative innovation and software development, space and service design, teaching and learning, library publishing and open pedagogy. Current projects: 3D Digital Herbarium, GIS Data Archive, 360 Theatre, simulation and gamification for career skills development, Cosmos in the Stacks, and Discovering Humboldt with Google Maps. Past projects include inventing the first scanning booktruck, launching Open SUNY Textbooks, and more recently, working with students to develop open source software solutions, such as; Citing Insights, SpaceUse, and HumSpot.

 

Talk Description: Libraries are crucial open learning infrastructure elevating curricular and co-curricular student experiences that better prepare students and their portfolios for future careers. This presentation describes innovative Open Source projects at Cal Poly Humboldt Library, and detail a variety of strategies for software development, research and development. Engaging students in real-world open source project has tremendous value to launch careers and new ways of learning. For instance, Cal Poly Humboldt students created the world's first 3D Digital Herbarium: https://3dherbarium.org/collections/search Strategies to engage students as co-creators will be presented that can be easily adaptable to other institutions.
